Pluto is no longer classified as a planet because the International Astronomical Union made and official definition for planet in 2006. This definition includes the requirement that the object has to have cleared its neighborhood. Pluto doesn't meet that criterion. It was reclassified as a dwarf planet. There are currently five officically recognized dwarf planets, Pluto, Eris, Ceres, Makemake, and Haumea.
