Heron's Formula - Lesson Summary

Area of a triangle is calculated generally using the formula 1 2  × b × h, where b is the base and h is the height(altitude) of the triangle.

Heron’s formula is used to determine the area of a triangle, when the lengths of the three sides are known.

Heron’s formula states that, if a, b and c are the sides of a triangle, then the area of the triangle is equal to s(s - a)(s - b)(s - c), where s is the semi perimeter i.e. half of the perimeter of the triangle and s = (a + b + c) 2 .
The formula of the area of a triangle given by Heron, is also known as Hero’s formula.

Units of measurement of any plane figure are in square metres, square centimetres, etc.

Area of a quadrilateral whose sides and one diagonal are given, is calculated by dividing the quadrilateral into two triangles and using the Heron’s formula.
